While Viagra (sildenafil citrate) has been on the market since 1998, and
PT141 is not yet available and is still in clinical trials, studies thus far
have shown that PT141 is more effective in treating erectile dysfunction (ED) in
men and may be better tolerated by men who could not take Viagra. Viagra was
initially studied for treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris both related
to cardiovascular disease. The studies found that Viagra improved erectile
dysfunction and it was decided to market it as a treatment for erectile
dysfunction rather than for angina. It became the first drug available in the
United States for erectile dysfunction.
Viagra works on the vascular system by increasing blood flow to the penis
thereby causing an erection. Some studies showed that Viagra enhanced sexual
pleasure for women by increasing blood flow to the female sexual organs, however
Viagra was marketed primarily as a treatment for male erectile dysfunction.
Common side effect of Viagra include sneezing, headache, flushing, prolonged
erections, heart palpitations, and light sensitivity. More serious side effects
include severe hypotension (low blood pressure), myocardial infarction,
ventricular arrhythmias, stroke and sudden death.
PT141 has a different delivery mechanism than Viagra. Rather than affecting the
vascular system like Viagra, PT141 works on the brain to help trigger sexual
arousal.
Because it works on the brain, it has proven to improve sexual dysfunction in
both men and women and it is hoped to be the first sexual enhancement drug
available for women and not just for men. PT141 has been proven to enhance both
sexual desire and function unlike Viagra which only improves sexual function.
Men reported PT141 to be more effective than Viagra with a longer duration of
action and more rapid onset time, and comparable or better quality erections.
The side effects of PT141 are much less severe than with Viagra. Side effects of
PT141 are mild and include nausea, nasal congestion or post nasal drip, and
headache.
Because of the mid side effects, the fact that it works for both men and women,
and that improves both sexual desire and function, PT141 is believed to be a
much more effective and highly marketable treatment for sexual dysfunction.
