PT141 is nasally administered and does not interact with other drugs, food or
alcohol. is non-addictive, works for both men and women, and has no serious side
effects. It has been shown not to produce the cardiovascular side effects found
in other erectile dysfunction drugs currently on the market such as lowering
blood pressure.
In studies with women PT141 was found to produce mild side effects that included
nausea, headache and nasal congestion. In studies with men PT141 was found to
produce facial flushing, nausea, aftertaste, and post-nasal drip. The
gastrointestinal effects such as nausea were a result of taking higher doses of
PT141.
The side effects produced by PT141 have been more of a positive nature. PT141 is
a derivative of Melanotan II which was initially tested as a sunless tanning
agent and was found to be effective for producing tanning, but it was also found
to facilitate weight loss, and had anti-inflammatory effects. An unexpected side
effect was in the area of sexual arousal and spontaneous erections. Because
PT141 acts on the arousal centers in the brain and not on the vascular system
increasing blood flow to the penis, both men and women enjoy the benefits of
increased desire and arousal.
In studies conducted by Palatin Technologies, the company developing PT141,
there were many positive side effects that were experienced by the male
patients. Approximately 70% of the patients found PT141 to be as good or more
effective than other male enhancing drugs, the quality of erection was found to
be comparable or better than other male enhancing drugs, and PT141 had a longer
duration of action and a faster onset time. Studies also found PT141 to be safe
even at lower doses and because of the different mechanism of delivery (works on
the brain rather than the vascular system), it has the potential to be effective
for men who could not take other male enhancing drugs.
